Use the free Resize Image to 20KBDrop a photo and get a JPG under 20KB, ready for online forms and uploads. No sign-up, no upload – runs in your browserConvert nowTo resize an image to 20KB, open a free tool such as ConvertLime's Resize Image to 20KB, drop in your photo or signature, and download the new JPG a moment later. It lowers the quality step by step until the file is just under 20KB, and only makes the picture smaller in pixels if it has to. Nothing to install, no sign-up, and your photo never leaves your phone or computer.
This guide is for anyone filling in an Indian exam, job or government form – SSC, UPSC, banking, railway, state recruitment or passport-style applications – where the photo or signature upload keeps getting rejected.
Why forms ask for such a small file
Online application forms receive lakhs of photos and signatures. Small files keep the website fast and the records easy to store and print on admit cards. That is why many forms ask for:
- A JPG or JPEG file (not PNG, not HEIC, not PDF)
- A maximum file size, often a small number of KB such as 20KB or 50KB
- Sometimes a minimum file size too, so the photo is not too blurry
- Sometimes exact pixel sizes (width × height) or a ratio
These rules are different for every exam and can change every year. Read the official notice for your form and write down the exact numbers before you start.
How to resize an image to 20KB with ConvertLime
- Crop first. For a photo, keep your head and the top of your shoulders. For a signature, cut away the empty white paper around it. Your phone's Photos or Gallery app has a crop button under Edit.
- Open the Resize Image to 20KB tool in any browser – Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.
- Drop your photo into the box, or tap it to choose a file from your phone or computer.
- The tool lowers the JPG quality a little at a time until the file fits under 20KB. If the photo is very large, it also shrinks the width and height.
- Tap Download. The new file is a JPG, ready to upload.
iPhone photos saved as HEIC work too – the tool turns them into JPG at the same time. If you just want a normal JPG first, use the HEIC to JPG converter. Not sure what HEIC is? Read what a HEIC file is.
Photo or signature: what to check before uploading
| Photo | Signature | |
|---|---|---|
| Background | Plain, light colour (often white) | Plain white paper |
| What to crop to | Face and top of shoulders | The signature only, small margin |
| Common mistake | Full-body photo, face too small | Blue lines from ruled paper |
| Looks fine at 20KB? | Yes, if cropped tightly | Yes, very easily |
| File type | JPG / JPEG | JPG / JPEG |
A signature has only dark lines on white, so it shrinks to 20KB with almost no visible change. A photo has more detail, so cropping close to the face matters more.
Tips to keep your photo clear at 20KB
- Use good light. Stand facing a window during the day. A dark, grainy photo turns muddy when it is made small.
- Start with the original photo, not a screenshot or a WhatsApp forward. WhatsApp already squeezes photos, and squeezing twice looks worse.
- Keep the face large in the frame. A tight crop gives the face more of the 20KB to use.
- Do not add filters or beauty effects. Many forms say the photo must look natural and recent.
- Check the result on a big screen if you can. Zoom in on the eyes – if they are clear, the photo is fine.
How to make an image 20KB without a website
You can do it with the apps already on your computer, but it takes trial and error, because they let you choose pixels or quality, not an exact KB number.
On Windows: open the photo in Paint, click Resize, choose Pixels, and type a smaller width (for example 300). Then use File → Save as → JPEG picture. Right-click the saved file and choose Properties to see the size. If it is still over 20KB, make it smaller again.
On a Mac: open the photo in Preview, choose Tools → Adjust Size to lower the width, then File → Export, pick JPEG and drag the Quality slider to the left. Preview shows the file size below the slider, so you can stop once it reads under 20KB.
On a phone: most phones do not have a built-in "make this 20KB" option, which is why a browser tool is the quickest way.
What if the form needs a different size?
Not every form uses 20KB. If yours allows more, use a bigger limit – the picture will look sharper:
- Resize image to 50KB – common for photos on many forms
- Resize image to 100KB or 200KB – for documents and certificates
- Compress Image – choose your own quality and any maximum size in KB, useful for odd limits like 15KB or 30KB
If the form wants a document as a PDF instead of a photo, turn it into one with JPG to PDF. For more on photos versus signatures and pixel sizes, see our guide on how to resize an image to 50KB.
Common upload errors and what they mean
- "File size exceeds limit" – the file is bigger than allowed. Run it through the 20KB tool again or pick a smaller limit.
- "File size is less than minimum" – the file is too small. Use a clearer original or the compressor at a higher quality.
- "Invalid file format" – the form wants JPG. Photos from the tool are always JPG; make sure the name ends in
.jpgor.jpeg. - "Image dimensions are not valid" – the form wants exact pixel sizes. Crop or resize to those numbers first, then make it 20KB.
Once your photo and signature both upload, take a screenshot of the preview page before you pay the fee or submit, so you have a record of what you sent.
Frequently asked questions
What is the size limit for SSC, UPSC or bank exam photos?
It changes between exams and between years, so always read the notice for your exact form. Many forms ask for a small JPG photo and signature, often somewhere between 10KB and 100KB, and some also give pixel sizes.
Why does the form say my photo is too big even though it looks small?
The form checks file size in KB, not how big the photo looks on screen. A phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, which is more than 100 times bigger than 20KB. You need to shrink the file itself.
Will my face still be clear at 20KB?
Yes, for a passport-style photo. Forms show the photo small, so 20KB is enough for a sharp face if you crop tightly first. Avoid shrinking a full-length photo, because the face becomes tiny.
My form also has a minimum size, like 10KB. What do I do?
Check the downloaded file size. If it is below the minimum, start again with a larger, clearer scan or photo, or use the Compress Image tool with a higher quality setting until the file sits inside the range.
Is it safe to resize my ID photo and signature online?
With ConvertLime, yes. The resizing happens inside your own browser, so your photo and signature are never sent to anyone.
Can I resize a signature to 20KB too?
Yes. Sign in dark ink on plain white paper, take a straight photo in good light, crop close to the signature, then use the same 20KB tool.
