First, decide: old photos or new photos?

There are two separate jobs here, and they have different fixes.

  • Photos you already took are stored as HEIC. A setting change won't touch them. You need to convert them (Methods 1 and 2).
  • Photos you take from now on can be saved as JPG straight away (Method 3).

Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone in Safari

This works on any iPhone with iOS 17 or 18 and handles many photos at once.

  1. Open Safari and go to the HEIC to JPG converter.
  2. Tap the box. A menu appears – choose Photo Library to pick from your photos, or Choose File to pick from the Files app.
  3. Select one or more photos and tap Add (or Done).
  4. Each photo converts in a second or two, right on your phone.
  5. Tap Download for each photo, or Download all as ZIP.
  6. Open the Files app and look in Downloads to find them. Tap a ZIP file once to unpack it.

From the Files app you can attach the JPGs to an email, upload them to a website, or share them to WhatsApp.

Need the photos in a single document instead? HEIC to PDF does that – handy for receipts, ID scans or forms.

Method 2: Copy and paste into the Files app

This uses only Apple's own apps. On recent iOS versions, a photo pasted into Files is usually saved as a JPG.

  1. Open Photos and tap Select, then pick your photos.
  2. Tap the Share button and choose Copy Photos (or Copy Photo).
  3. Open the Files app and go to On My iPhone (or any folder).
  4. Press and hold on an empty part of the screen and tap Paste.
  5. Check the file names – they should now end in .jpg or .jpeg.

If they still end in .heic, use Method 1 instead.

Method 3: Make your iPhone take JPG photos

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Camera, then Formats.
  3. Choose Most Compatible.

From now on, the Camera saves JPG photos. The trade-off is space: a JPG often takes up close to twice the room of a HEIC photo that looks the same. If your iPhone is often nearly full, you may prefer to keep High Efficiency and convert only when you need to. Our HEIC vs JPEG comparison goes through this choice.

Method 4: Let the iPhone convert when you share

The iPhone already converts many photos to JPG when they leave your phone:

  • Mail and most messaging apps usually receive a JPG.
  • Cable to a computer: go to Settings → Photos, scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC, and choose Automatic. Photos copied to a PC then arrive as JPG.
  • AirDrop to a Mac and iCloud links often keep the HEIC, because Apple devices can open it.

If someone on Windows still receives a HEIC file, send them the HEIC to JPG converter link – or point them to our guide on converting HEIC to JPG on Windows.

Photo too big to upload?

JPGs are larger than HEIC photos, and some forms set strict limits. After converting:

Both tools work in Safari on your iPhone, the same way as the converter.

Quick answers to common hiccups

Safari says the download finished but I can't find it. Open the Files app, tap Browse, and look in Downloads (it may be under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).

The photo lost its Live Photo motion. A JPG holds one still picture. The moving version stays safe in your Photos app.

I changed the setting but old photos are still HEIC. That's expected. The setting only affects new photos – convert older ones with Method 1.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make my iPhone take JPG photos instead of HEIC?

Yes. Open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Every new photo will be a JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC.

Do I need an app to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone?

No. You can use Safari with a free browser converter, or copy photos into the Files app. Nothing needs to be installed.

Does Most Compatible make my photos worse?

The pictures look the same. Each photo just takes up more storage space, often close to twice as much, so your iPhone fills up faster.

Why do my photos arrive as JPG when I email them but HEIC in iCloud links?

The iPhone usually changes photos to JPG when you share them with Mail or other apps, but cloud services and AirDrop to another Apple device often keep the original HEIC.

Are my photos uploaded when I use ConvertLime on my phone?

No. The conversion runs inside Safari on your iPhone, so your photos stay on your phone.
